What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple numerical value calculated from your height and weight. It’s one of the most widely used screening tools for assessing whether a person’s weight falls within a healthy range relative to their height.
BMI categories
The World Health Organization defines BMI ranges as follows:
- Under 18.5 → Underweight
- 18.5 – 24.9 → Healthy weight
- 25.0 – 29.9 → Overweight
- 30.0 and above → Obese
How is it calculated?
BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared (kg/m²). This calculator handles all unit conversions automatically whether you enter imperial or metric measurements.
Know the limits — BMI doesn’t account for muscle mass, bone density, or body fat distribution. A highly muscular person may have a high BMI without carrying excess fat. Use it as one data point, not the full picture.
Units
Based on WHO classification · BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
